Classes Of Drugs

These medications fall under several categories like selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or SSRIs, benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants. Other classes also include beta blockers and monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs.

Benzodiazepines help relieve anxiety and have a sedative effect. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) help in the relief of depression and its associated symptoms.

Beta blockers can be used for many other conditions. For anxiety, they can be helpful because they help block the effect of adrenaline. When anxiety strikes, adrenaline is released into the bloodstream. Beta blockers also slow down your heart.

The action of MAOIs are thought to help maintain higher levels of the three neurotransmitters of the brain, thus lessening your symptoms. However, it's used as a last resort. It can also have serious dietary interactions.

SSRIs help the brain maintain a proper supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin. SSRIs are very commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders and generally well tolerated.

Don't be confused by a list of anxiety medications. Work closely with your doctor and if you are concerned by anything, let him or her know. You have nothing to worry about.
